The Dustette Vacuum Inspector

An installation entitled Dustette Vacuum Inspector (empty each time used), set up at the Silk and Steel exhibition (September 2014) at GaleriĆ© Noko, Port Elizabeth, engaged a young girl in a spontaneous game. She attempted to move the work, adjusting the funnels and tubes, climbing in and around the separate components and even making an effort to climb into one of the cages! Her parents were watching her, and did not seem to mind her ‘disrupting’ the work. This example is reflective of the way in which I hope all viewers will play – as a child would, in a sense that does not observe any rules – in their own unique way that formulates an individual understanding of the work.

See article below for further reading on the Silk and Steel exhibition.
